The Importance of Immunizations
August is National Immunization Awareness Month. While immunizations are crucial for parents with younger children, all ages should stay on top of their regular immunization schedules. Unfortunately, many people can feel overwhelmed by childhood vaccinations and vaccination schedules. And while, over the years, immunizations have generated some controversy in our society, there is overwhelming evidence that vaccinations are an essential piece of everyone’s health plan.
What is an Immunization?
Vaccines improve the immune system’s ability to fight diseases. A vaccine is a weakened version or part of the germ that causes a particular disease. By giving your body exposure to a disease in a vaccine form, the body learns to build up antibodies to protect them from contracting that disease when they are exposed to it.
Why are Immunizations so Important?
The emphasis on the importance of immunizations is because the benefits are two-fold. First, vaccinations protect us from potentially harmful diseases like hepatitis B, mumps, polio, and measles. Second, the more people who have vaccines for these dangerous diseases, the lower the chance of an outbreak in the community. Immunizations keep other people safe by eliminating illnesses that can spread from person to person.
Are Immunizations Safe?
Vaccines are some of the safest and most effective medicines, making many dangerous childhood diseases rare today. In addition, researchers worldwide have repeatedly proven that vaccines are safe and effective for the general population. Although some people may have mild reactions such as swelling at the injection site, soreness, and fever when they get vaccines, the benefits of immunizations far outweigh possible side effects.
If you are not sure if you or your child is up to date on their immunizations or if you have questions about vaccines, talk to your healthcare provider. Most vaccines have a recommended schedule for administration, but you can always protect your family by revisiting or starting a vaccine schedule.
