What Everyone Should Know About Healthy Lungs

______________________________________________________________________ November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. Our lungs are heroes of our respiratory system and deserve the recognition that the month of awareness brings. When they are working well and doing their job, we might not even spend much time thinking about our lungs. But it is essential to prioritize your lung health. Here are some ways to reduce your risk of lung disease and keep your lungs healthy.

Ditch the Cigarettes and Vapes

You have heard it before, but it must be said! Smoking is the leading cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, and preventable death. There is no safe way to consume tobacco, so ditching cigarettes and vapes is an excellent step in keeping your lungs healthy and improving your quality of life.

Get Fresh Air

Outdoor air quality is typically better than indoor air quality. Take time each day to spend time outside in the fresh air. There are always ways to improve indoor air quality to keep your lungs healthy. Keep your home clean by vacuuming, dusting, and replacing your air filters regularly.

Hydrate Your Body

Proper hydration is another way to reduce your risk of lung disease. Drinking plenty of water thins the mucus the lungs produce, making breathing easier. The good news is that hydrating your body has many benefits for your overall health. Try to drink at least half your body weight in water each day.

Live an Active Lifestyle

Physical activity is beneficial to your whole-body health, including your lungs. According to the American Lung Association, when you exercise, your heart and lungs work harder to supply the additional oxygen your muscles demand. So just like exercise makes your muscles stronger, it also helps your lungs to get stronger. Aim to get 30 minutes of moderate physical activity five days a week.

Avoid Illness and Infection

One of the best ways to keep your lungs healthy is to avoid colds and respiratory illnesses that affect your lung health. There are several steps you can take to prevent illness leading to more severe complications for your lungs.

·       Wash your hands regularly with soap and water.

·       Keep your hands away from your face and eyes.

·       Avoid contact with others who might be ill.

·       Stay home if you are sick.

·       Keep up to date on vaccines, including the flu virus vaccine.
