At Home Tips for Flu Recovery

Chills, aches, fever, stuffy nose, and a headache are the sure signs of the dreaded flu. The flu is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by the influenza virus. Unfortunately, there is no cure, so you will have to ride out the symptoms, which usually last about a week, with the most severe spanning about two to three days.

While there is nothing fun about having the flu, there are some things you can do to make your recovery more comfortable.

Rest

This might sound obvious, but letting your body rest is essential to your recovery; go to bed earlier and let yourself sleep while your body fights the virus. Sleep and rest will help decrease the possibility of severe flu complications such as pneumonia.

Monitor Your Fever

A fever can be a good thing because it means your body has turned up the heat to fight the virus. Keep track of your temperature throughout your illness. If you are uncomfortable, you can take over-the-counter medication such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen. Reach out to your pharmacist for advice on this.

Hydrate

Make sure to drink plenty of fluids, such as water, electrolyte drinks, and teas. You want to stay hydrated to help your body replace lost liquids. In addition, hydrating will help turn that nasty, thick mucus into a thin liquid you can cough up and spit out.

Add Moisture to the Air

If you are stuffed up, dry air won’t help. Losen up your congestion by adding moisture to the air. You can turn on the shower and let hot water run, filling the bathroom with steam. Sit away from the water with the door closed to breathe in the moisturized air. Another option is to use a vaporizer or humidifier available for a reasonable price at your local pharmacy.

Ease Your Cough

Honey can be a natural remedy for that uncomfortable cough. A spoonful can make a big difference, especially in the evening. Consider over-the-counter medications to keep you more comfortable as well. Try an expectorant, which turns mucus into liquid so you can cough it up. Another remedy is a cough suppressant, which can soothe a dry cough. Your pharmacist can suggest an option that is best for you.

Relive Sinus Pressure

Sinus pressure can be the most uncomfortable part of having the flu. Saline nose drops are a safe option for any age. Put several drops into one nostril and then blow the mucus and saline out into a tissue. Decongestants such as Sudafed might offer relief because they work to open your nasal passages and relieve pressure in your sinuses.

When you are sick with the flu, it can seem like you will never feel better again. But if you sleep, rest, and hydrate, you will recover within one to two weeks. So prepare to keep yourself comfortable by having what you need on hand in your home.
