Self Care Tips

No matter where you are in life or what you’re doing, it’s always important to take some time every day to take care of yourself. Self care is different for everyone and could be mental, physical, social, emotional, spiritual, or a combination of all of the above!

Whatever you choose to do, establishing a self care routine can have extremely positive long-term effects, such as reducing stress and anxiety, increasing happiness and energy, reducing burnout, and building stronger interpersonal connections.

The new year is a great time to reassess your own self care and see what small changes you can make to improve your routine. Consider adding these self care tips to your routine this year:

  • Movement. Do what you can to increase your daily physical activity. Try taking a daily 30-minute walk to help lower blood pressure and decrease your chance of type 2 diabetes, watch a YouTube video for an ab or yoga workout, take the stairs, or dance around the kitchen to some music while cooking! Whatever you choose to do, just make sure you’re taking care of your body to fuel it.

  • Diet. Speaking of fuel, take a look at your diet and make sure you’re feeding yourself healthy foods that will efficiently fuel your body. Food should energize you, and your body will respond positively to the healthy choices you make. Incorporate some heart-healthy soups or protein-packed smoothies, and even try eating less meat. You should also make sure you’re drinking enough water – staying hydrated will help with headaches and migraines and flush out any stressors in your body.

  • Sleep. Establishing a good sleep routine is another way to give your body the energy it needs to function well throughout the day. Go to sleep and wake up at reasonable times, getting at least 8 hours of sleep per day.

  • New Hobbies. Take some time to enjoy yourself with some new hobbies! Try taking up a new instrument, making some music, listening to new music, planting a garden, volunteering, starting a new book, or something else you’re interested in. Trying new self care hobbies will allow you to take time for yourself, instead of spending it worrying about the next thing you need to do.

  • Connect. Make sure you’re staying social and connecting with others. Text, call, Facetime, or play games to help you stay connected to your friends, family, and loved ones. Get some face-to-face time with others, too, if you can. Maintaining close connections is essential to your well-being, and continuing to cultivate these relationships will keep you happier in the long run.

  • Therapy. Find a therapist that can help you make personal growth and progress in your own life. You don’t need to have a mental health crisis to have a therapist; having a therapist can help you manage your stress and find new ways to solve problems affecting your everyday life. Asking for help is never a bad thing! Just make sure you’re seeing the right therapist for you; finding a therapist that fits your needs will make all the difference.
