The Importance of Oral Hygiene
__________________________________________________________________________________
Since you were very young, you have
heard how important it is to brush your teeth. But did you know dental hygiene
is vital to your overall health?
Taking good care of your dental health helps to reduce your chances of developing heart disease, respiratory problems, and even dementia. So what are the most important parts of caring for your gums and teeth? Our quick checklist shares the importance of dental hygiene and how to keep your oral health in excellent shape!
Brushing
Every time you eat, food becomes stuck between your teeth and
gums. Brushing after a meal will ensure your teeth are getting clean. Make sure
you are spending about two to three minutes brushing your teeth. You can divide
your mouth into quadrants and brush in 30-second segments. Brushing often will
help you keep your teeth bright and help prevent gum disease and bad breath.
Toothbrush Care
An electric or battery-operated toothbrush can help reduce
plaque and gum disease more than manual brushing. Replace your toothbrush every
three months, at least. You should immediately replace the brush if your
bristles become irregular or flat. Allow your toothbrush to air dry after you
use it and store it in an upright position. Do not store your toothbrush in a
closed container because it can encourage bacteria, mold, and yeast to grow.
Tongue Cleaning
Take a moment to brush your tongue well when caring for your
teeth. Brushing your tongue will remove bacteria and help keep your breath
smelling fresh.
Flossing
Daily flossing is essential to gum health because a toothbrush
cannot reach the bacteria in the tiny spaces between your teeth and under the
gum line. Gently slide the floss into each space between your gum and tooth.
Floss at least once daily, if not after every meal. If you have sensitive gums,
consider using a water pick for flossing.
Mouthwash
Mouthwash can remove bacteria in your mouth's crevices and soft
tissue. Include mouthwash in your daily oral health routines to further combat
bacteria in your mouth.
Diet
Tobacco, drinks such as coffee, and sugary foods are all
challenges to oral health. The ingredients found in tobacco products stain your
teeth and are linked to an overwhelming number of cases of oral tissue damage,
not to mention cancers. Dark-colored drinks stain your teeth, and some acidic ones chip away at your enamel. Sugar causes cavities
which are bacterial infections created by acids in the mouth. Bacteria feed off
this high-sugar diet leading to cavities and tooth enamel decay.
Regular Dental Visits
Be sure to see your dentist before something is wrong with your
teeth. Preventative care will keep your teeth healthy and strong and help you
find minor issues before they become major.
