Healthy Heart Tips for World Heart Day
As one of the hardest working muscles in your body, the heart is essential for whole-body health. It is so vital that every year, we celebrate World Heart Day on September 29 to pay homage to our hearts and educate ourselves on how to keep them in tip-top shape.
World Heart Day was created by the World Heart Foundation to teach people around the globe what they can do to prevent and control cardiovascular disease, including heart disease and stroke. These diseases are the world’s leading cause of death, taking 18.6 million lives each year. So, let’s do our part to celebrate Heart Health by looking at some things you can do to keep your heart healthy.
Enjoy a Healthy Diet
You’ve heard it before, and we are here to remind you that a healthy diet will make a significant difference to your heart health. Here are a couple of minor changes you can make in your diet to improve your cardiovascular health.
- Eat lean meats such as chicken and fish, which have less saturated fat than red meat.
- Consume fruits and vegetables as half of your diet.
- Limit your salt intake to less than 2,000 mg of sodium daily to keep your blood pressure down.
- Eat more soluble fiber to lower your cholesterol and manage blood sugar.
- Add Omega-3 fatty acids into your diet to reduce blood pressure, lower triglyceride levels, and protect the heart by slowing plaque growth and reducing arrhythmia.
- Limit alcohol and sugar consumption.
Exercise Regularly
For the best cardiovascular health results, exercise for 40 minutes three to four times a week. In addition, try varying your fitness routines and incorporating cardio, strength training, and stretching. Not only are all these types of workouts important for good health but varying your workouts will keep you engaged and motivated.
Live a Healthy Lifestyle
Taking good care of your heart can happen through overall wellness, including mental and physical health. Give your heart lots of love by making sure you monitor all areas of your health.
- Find ways to relieve stress by doing things you enjoy or using deep breathing techniques that work with your lifestyle.
- Studies show that those who donate blood regularly have fewer heart attacks, so make time to donate blood every six months.
- Get your sleep! Adults need seven to nine hours of sleep. Good sleep will positively impact your blood pressure and lower the risk of diabetes, depression, and diabetes.
The heart is an incredible part of our bodies that works without us even thinking about it. Your cardiovascular health is within your control through diet, exercise, and lifestyle. As we approach World Heart Day, make minor changes to give your heart the love it deserves.
