Skin Protection: Tips for Fun in the Sun!
Summer has arrived, and with it comes the desire to spend as much time outside in the sun as possible. Enjoying the sunny weather is part of the season's joys, but don't get caught unprotected. A bad sunburn is painful and can do long-term damage to your skin.
Here are some tips for safe fun in the sun this summer.
Sunscreen
Wearing sunscreen is probably the first thing that comes to mind when protecting yourself from the sun. But did you know you should protect your skin from the sun every single day, even when it is not sunny outside? The sun's rays can still filter through on cloudy or cool days. Reapply your sunscreen every two to three hours and try to use at least SPF 30. Don't forget those often-overlooked areas like your lips, the tops of your feet, and the tips of your ears.
Seek the Shade
The sun is most intense between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. This timeframe is your greatest chance of getting sunburned. But those are prime hours of the day for going to the beach or pool, right? If you must be outside, create shade for yourself with an umbrella or a pop-up tent, or use a building's overhang for sun protection.
Wear Protective Clothing and Accessories
Sunglasses with UVA or UVB protection can help protect your eyes and the sensitive skin around your eyes. Additionally, you can wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face, ears, and neck from the sun. There are also lines of clothing that are given an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) rating and offer sun protection that you can wear on days when you will be spending a lot of time in the sun.
Monitor your Medications
Summer is a good time to refresh your understanding of your medications. However, some medicines can make you more sensitive to the sun. Be aware if you are taking any of these medications and limit your time in the sun accordingly. Your local pharmacist can consult with you on medication side effects.
Check Your Skin
Watch for changes in your skin with regular skin checks. Monitor your existing moles, freckles, and birthmarks to change and watch for new ones to form. Use a mirror to assess those hard-to-see areas, and be sure to go for regular skin checks by your dermatologist.
